COMING TOGETHER: STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN GHANA AND CANADA TO ADDRESS MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH

 

The University of Alberta, faculty of nursing and the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONM) win The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee (QES) Advanced Scholars Scholarship. The Scholarship is for the period of 2017-2020 with a total amount of $500,000.00. The University of Alberta project lead is Prof. Magdalena Sophia Richter (Solina) Richter and the University of Ghana lead is Dr. Lydia Aziato. Within the period of the grant, seven (7) faculty members of the SoNM shall visit the University of Alberta for a minimum of ninety (90) days. There are 3 categories of applicants as follows:

  1. Doctoral Researchers
    1. Must be enrolled in a full-time PhD program at a degree granting university;
    2. Must be undertaking full-time research and cannot be completing course work;
    3. A Ghanaian citizen or a permanent resident;
    4. Participate in community engagement activities in Canada;
    5. Commitment to spend a minimum of 90 consecutive days (excluding travel days) in the Canadian partner institution;
    6. Conduct research on a full-time basis at the Canadian partner institution (University of Alberta) of which no less than 30% of award time must involve research at the research placement partner (off campus).
  2. Post-Doctoral Researchers
    1. An individual who is conducting research after the completion of their doctoral studies;
    2. Must be undertaking full-time research and cannot be completing course work;
    3. A Ghanaian citizen or a permanent resident;
    4. Participate in community engagement activities in Canada;
    5. Commitment to spend a minimum of 90 consecutive days (excluding travel days) in the Canadian partner institution.
    6. Conduct research on a full-time basis at the Canadian partner institution (University of Alberta) of which no less than 30% of award time must involve research at the research placement partner (off campus).
  3. Early Career Research
    1. An individual who has completed independent research for four (4) to seven (7) years or is in a tenure-track position at a degree granting institution.
    2. Must be undertaking full-time research and cannot be completing course work;
    3. A Ghanaian citizen or a permanent resident;
    4. Participate in community engagement activities in Canada;
    5. Commitment to spend a minimum of 90 consecutive days (excluding travel days) in the Canadian partner institution.
    6. Conduct research on a full-time basis at the Canadian partner institution (University of Alberta) of which no less than 30% of award time must involve research at the research placement partner (off campus).

The focus of the scholarship is Maternal and Child Health related research/intervention and selected scholars will be assigned mentors to work with while in each University. The SONM will also receive Scholars from the University of Alberta

The first cohort of Post-doc Scholars from SONM are Dr. Kwadwo A. Korsah, Dr. Gladys Dzansi and Dr. Lilian A. Ohene and they are expected to visit the University of Alberta May 2018 and stay for a minimum of 90 days.
