STUDENTS AND FACULTY OF THE COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING DEPARTMENT DONATES TO JAMES CAMP PRISON, ACCRA

 

Students and Faculty of the Community Health Nursing Department, SoNM paid a visit to the James Camp prisons in Accra on Friday July 19, 2019. The visit came up after students had taken a course in Global Health and Vulnerable populations.

 

During the course, Students were enthused with a desire to offer community service to the inmates at the Prison. The students and faculty donated toiletries and water to the inmates. The group also educated the inmates on health issues.

The group made several observations during the visit. The inmates undergo vocational training such as: beads making, carpentry, braiding of hair, batik, sewing, masonry, tilapia and crops farming, making of doormats, and bridal fans among others. Upon interaction with the inmates, they expressed the need to be supported to continue with these vocations after they have served their term and have been discharged. They also expressed their need to be supported with items such as medication, toiletries and groceries whilst confined at the camp.
